Vision

At Coop De’Tat, our vision is to nurture and heal the land through regenerative farming. We believe in working with nature, not against it, to produce healthy food while also restoring the environment. Our approach is based on both cutting-edge agricultural science and a heartfelt respect for the earth and future generations.

This regenerative vision is built on several core principles: caring for the soil’s microbiome, responsible water management, maximizing sunlight capture, protecting air quality, maintaining robust compost systems, and always going beyond organic practices. By focusing on these key areas, we aim to create a farm ecosystem that is sustainable, resilient, and brimming with life.

Soil Microbiome: Nurturing the Living Soil

Our soil is more than just dirt – it’s a living community of microorganisms that forms the foundation of everything we do. We know that a healthy soil microbiome (rich with bacteria, fungi, and earthworms) is essential for growing nutrient-dense plants and lush pastures. By treating the soil life with care, we ensure that nutrients are naturally cycled, pests are kept in check, and our crops and animals can thrive without heavy chemical inputs.

To nurture this underground ecosystem, we use gentle farming methods. We minimize soil disturbance (avoiding heavy tillage) to protect soil structure and mycorrhizal networks. We also enrich the ground with organic matter through cover crops and by adding compost from our farm. These practices feed the microbes and build dark, crumbly soil that is teeming with life. Over time, this approach creates more fertile land that grows healthier plants and becomes more resilient each year.

Water Management: Every Drop Counts

Water is a precious resource on our farm, and we manage it with great care and intention. By keeping our fields covered with plants and mulch, we protect the soil from erosion and help rainwater soak in rather than run off. Healthy, absorbent soil acts like a sponge – it holds onto moisture and makes it available to plants during dry periods. Thanks to this, our pastures stay greener longer through droughts and we rely less on irrigation.

We also take steps to preserve water quality. Our regenerative practices avoid synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, preventing harmful runoff into nearby streams or ponds. We recycle nutrients through composting and mindful grazing, so excess nutrients don’t leach into groundwater. By working with the natural water cycle, we ensure that every drop of water is used wisely and returned clean to the environment.

Sunlight Capture: Maximizing Solar Energy

Sunlight is the original source of energy for our farm. We strive to capture as much of that solar energy as possible through green, growing plants. Instead of leaving fields bare, we maintain continuous living cover and diverse plant life that turn sunlight into food and organic matter via photosynthesis. From grasses in our pastures to cover crops in our fields, every plant is working to soak up the sun and feed the soil.

We also look for ways to use sunlight at multiple levels. In some areas, we integrate trees or shrubs alongside our fields – an agroforestry approach that lets us harvest sunlight at different heights. The more sunlight we capture in plants, the more biomass we can return to the soil as compost or mulch. This abundance of plant growth not only feeds our animals and yields healthy crops, but also draws down carbon dioxide from the air, helping to fight climate change in our own small way.

Air Quality: Fresh and Clean

Regenerative farming also means keeping the air clean and healthy. On our farm, we avoid practices that pollute the air. We don’t use synthetic pesticides or herbicides that release toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. And by keeping the ground covered year-round, we prevent dust and soil particles from being blown away by wind. The result is fresher air on the farm and less loss of our precious topsoil.

Our open, pasture-based system keeps animals and soil in balance, which helps minimize odors and greenhouse gas emissions. Instead of creating large manure lagoons or burning waste, we compost our organic waste so it breaks down cleanly with minimal methane. Meanwhile, the many trees and plants around our fields are constantly taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In this way, our farm not only avoids polluting the air, it actually helps clean it by sequestering carbon and producing fresh oxygen – truly a breath of fresh air for us all.

Compost Systems: Closing the Loop

For us, sustainability means cycling nutrients back into the land, and composting is a big part of that. We maintain robust compost systems to turn farm “waste” into rich, life-giving fertilizer. All the manure from our animals, along with leaves, plant trimmings, and kitchen scraps, gets composted rather than thrown away. Over weeks and months, these materials break down into dark, crumbly humus – a natural fertilizer that our soil craves.

Through composting, we ensure that nothing on our farm goes to waste. This natural recycling process returns vital nutrients and beneficial microbes to the ground, greatly improving soil fertility year after year. Using our own compost means we depend less on outside fertilizers and keep organic waste out of landfills. It’s a satisfying, full-circle process: the healthy plants and animals we raise create the raw materials for compost, and that compost in turn feeds the next generation of plants. This ongoing cycle of renewal keeps our farm growing stronger and greener.

Beyond Organic: Farming in Nature’s Image

Our vision goes beyond simply following organic rules. While we gladly meet organic standards like shunning synthetic chemicals and GMOs, we push even further to actively regenerate the land. “Beyond organic” means that success for us isn’t just avoiding negatives – it’s about making a positive impact. We measure our success not only by what we don’t do (no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers), but by what we do create: richer soil, greater biodiversity, and a healthier farm ecosystem year after year.

We strive to farm in nature’s image, working with natural cycles rather than fighting against them. This involves combining crops and animals in complementary ways, growing a diversity of plants, and continuously learning and adapting to what our land is telling us. By honoring nature’s rhythms – from the pollinators in our cover crops to the grazing patterns of our livestock – we let the ecosystem guide our farming decisions.

Our animals live out on pasture with ample space and respect, and our fields teem with insects, birds, and other wildlife that find habitat on our farm. These are commitments beyond what any certification strictly requires; they come from our own dedication to doing what’s right for the land. By going beyond organic, we aim to leave our farm healthier and more vibrant for future generations. It’s our heartfelt promise that every decision we make will nourish the earth, our animals, our family, and our community.
